Style Files: Leading Ladies

Do you have a "style crush," friends? Is there a sassy/classy/brassy broad whose fashion choices are the stuff your dreams are made of?

Yeah, me too.

And I think it's kind of cool that I can track my own personal style evolution based on my lady crushes of a particular time - for instance, in middle school I was desperate for Lindsay Lohan's easy tomboy style in the remake of The Parent Trap, bangs and all. I even took it upon myself to cut my own hair in an effort to get Lindsay's adorable side swoop. Needless to say, my corkscrew curls did not respond well to a bang - poor little Katie!

Smash cut to high school and my passionate obsession for The O.C. - Marissa Cooper and Summer Roberts rocked Abercrombie tank tops, camoflauge pattern miniskirts, and henley shirts over bikini tops. My own high school style was more of a sweater vest and khakis look - I was (and am) 100% comfortable in my own skin, so I don't mind telling you that I looked more like Minkus from Boy Meets World than Marissa Cooper. I rocked it.

My style crushes of the past few years have been a lot more varied, but over the past couple of months there has been a definite shift in the clothes and the style icons that I'm drawn to - I've been gravitating away from Zooey Deschanel (sorry, Zooey!) and toward powerhouse female leads on political dramas. Cause that's a normal thing, right?

I'm really drawn to women with crossed arms and/or icy stares.

Enter Olivia Pope and Claire Underwood - two women you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley (or a boardroom). Icy, powerful, intelligent, and perfectly styled for every moment - from their perfectly coordinated workout ensembles to their silky leisure robes to their meticulously tailored pantsuits and pencil skirts, they've got this style thing all figured out. Think muted tones, sky high heels, and perfect fit. Can we just ogle some of their looks for a second?

See them all after the jump...

Swoon… talk about classy. Olivia and Claire may be complex and damaged characters, but they can rock a coat and handbag combo like no other.

But, unless a sudden windfall is coming my way, I can't actually buy the pieces they wear (think Dior, Prada, Ralph Lauren) - but I can certainly use their style as inspiration for my own look. For an Olivia/Claire look, stick with structured suit jackets, nude nail polish, belted winter coats, classic black pumps, and sleek hairstyles. The devil is in the details - the cut and fit of your clothing will mean the difference between nice and luxe. Just like Miss Pope would do it.

For more on the style seen on House of Cards, you can read this great piece from Elle magazine - and for more on the Scandal looks you love, you can see more here from The Washington Post.

Who are your style icons, friends? I'd love to hear what looks get your heart a-flutter - and maybe (just maybe) some of you were crushing on 1998 Lindsay Lohan, too? That was just me? Ok, then.

Until next time, my darlings!

Psst… one more thing! We have a new podcast out today - you can find The Red-Headed League: Episode 6 right here...    Enjoy!

  1. I'm not really sure who my style icon is right now, though I definitely have them. The last time I was really inspired by the style of actresses was when I watched Smash. It seemed like their nails were painted different colors every other scene!
